PsiQuantum, the US startup backed by Blackbird, and the Queensland and federal governments, is already working a number of months delayed on plans to construct its Brisbane facility and ship the world’s first quantum laptop.
Based in Palo Alto in 2016 by 4 expat Australian professors, PsiQuantum was backed by $940 million in joint funding from the Australian and Queensland governments, 20 months in the past in 2024, to construct the world’s first utility-scale quantum laptop in Brisbane. On the time, the startup mentioned it had “an aggressive plan to have the location operational by the top of 2027”.
However in Senate Estimates in Canberra final week, it emerged that regardless of plans to begin the Queensland capital construct in 2025, the challenge has not but begun session on the draft growth plan for the location at Brisbane airport. That course of, alone, takes two months.
InnovationAus reviews that the deputy secretary of the dept of business, science and assets (DISR), Helen Wilson, instructed the committee that public session by Brisbane Airport Company on the PsiQuantum growth was not but underway. One other DISR official instructed the senators that they don’t have any “particular dates” for the general public session interval.
The challenge had been flagged to get underway in mid-2025, so the extra delays may put the construct as much as 12 months delayed.
Whereas the federal authorities’s $470 million funding – the overall package deal is cut up 50-50% with the Queensland authorities – is a mixture of fairness grants and loans, the preliminary tranche of capital was meant to circulate the corporate in FY2025
Ms Wilson instructed the Senate committee that there had been no drawn down at this stage.
The unique announcement got here with an inference that Australia could get the world’s first quantum laptop by 2027.
However inside three months of that announcement, the California startup lower the same deal, price A$760m over 30 years, to construct a plant in Chicago, backed by the town, Illinois authorities, and native county, with the promise of America’s first million-qubit scale, fault-tolerant quantum laptop working there in 2028.
The timelines for each computer systems is now nearer to 2030.
In September, the firm introduced that the Chicago challenge was already underway.
The state authorities there, led by billionaire governor JB Pritzker, is spending one other US$500 million on the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park (IQMP), together with US$200m for a cryogenic plant for the cooling wants for PsiQuantum and customers.
That information got here simply three weeks after the corporate raised US$1 billion (A$1.5bn) in a Sequence E that doubled PsiQuantum’s valuation in 4 years to US$7bn (A$10.5bn.
Australian VC Blackbird backed PsiQuantum throughout 2021’s $450 million Sequence D.
The Brisbane facility consists of PsiQuantum’s Asia-Pacific headquarters, with room for 400 employees, a warehouse-style constructing housing quantum computer systems cooled to 4 Kelvins (-269°C, often called absolute zero), and a cryogenic plant constructing with a helium-based cooling system linked to the pc warehouse.
