Ripple USD Launches on Coinbase Across Three Blockchains

Updated October 29, 2026. Ripple USD (RLUSD) became available through Coinbase Prime, Coinbase Exchange and the Coinbase retail app on October 28, with deposits and withdrawals supported on the XRP Ledger (XRPL), Ethereum and Base. According to Coinbase’s launch announcement, customers in eligible regions can trade and manage the dollar-backed stablecoin and convert U.S. dollars into RLUSD at a 1:1 rate.

The launch gives Ripple’s stablecoin access to more retail and institutional trading infrastructure, but the distinction between what is available now and what is planned matters. Support for Coinbase Global Exchange customers, including the use of RLUSD as collateral, is not part of the initial rollout. Neither company has announced a date for those additional services.

What Is Available on Coinbase Today?

The October 28 statement from Ripple confirms three initial access points: Coinbase’s consumer app, its Exchange platform and Coinbase Prime for institutional clients. It also identifies the same three blockchain networks for deposits and withdrawals.

  • Trading and account access: eligible retail and institutional customers can hold, trade or manage RLUSD through the supported Coinbase platforms, subject to the products available to their accounts.
  • Dollar conversion: Coinbase advertises conversion from U.S. dollars into RLUSD at a 1:1 rate. Ripple also mentions conversions involving other supported U.S. dollar stablecoins, but neither announcement provides a comprehensive list of trading pairs or fees.
  • Deposits and withdrawals: the companies identify XRPL, Ethereum and Base as the supported routes for transferring RLUSD into and out of eligible Coinbase accounts.

These statements describe the announced rollout, not a guarantee that every feature is available in every country or for every account type. Coinbase explicitly limits access to supported regions.

XRPL, Ethereum and Base: Why the Network Choice Matters

RLUSD is a dollar-denominated asset, but the way a transaction is recorded depends on its blockchain. Ripple’s network documentation identifies the XRPL version as an issued token and the versions on Ethereum and Base as ERC-20 tokens. Base is an Ethereum-compatible network, not a second name for the Ethereum mainnet.

Coinbase-supported networkRLUSD representationPractical distinction
XRP Ledger (XRPL)XRPL issued tokenUses XRP Ledger accounts and transaction rules.
EthereumERC-20 tokenTransfers take place on Ethereum mainnet.
BaseERC-20 tokenTransfers take place on the separate Base network.

Coinbase supporting the same stablecoin on three networks does not mean a user can send an Ethereum deposit to a Base address or move RLUSD across chains without an appropriate supported route. Each deposit and withdrawal must use the exact network shown for that transaction. An ordinary blockchain transfer also should not be confused with a cross-chain bridge.

Coinbase’s deposit guidance warns that assets sent through an incorrect or unsupported network can be permanently lost. Users should verify the asset, selected network and destination instructions in their own Coinbase account before initiating a transfer.

Who Issues RLUSD, and What Backs It?

Coinbase provides access to RLUSD; it does not become the stablecoin’s issuer by listing it. RLUSD is issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, LLC, a Ripple subsidiary supervised as a limited-purpose trust company by the New York State Department of Financial Services. Ripple says RLUSD is backed by U.S. dollar deposits, short-term U.S. Treasury securities and other cash equivalents.

Ripple publishes reserve information and monthly independent attestation reports. Those reports are a way to examine disclosed backing at specific reporting dates, rather than proof that any third-party trading platform will always quote exactly one dollar per token.

The distinction between a conversion rate and a redemption right is also important. Under Ripple’s RLUSD user terms, direct redemption with the issuer is subject to eligibility and the applicable customer agreement. Holding RLUSD in a retail exchange account does not automatically create an unrestricted direct redemption relationship with Ripple. The terms also state that RLUSD is not protected by U.S. federal deposit insurance and that third-party market prices may fluctuate.

What Comes Next for Base and Coinbase Global Exchange?

Ripple says it will provide liquidity on Base to support RLUSD activity there. The companies have not disclosed a committed liquidity amount in their October 28 announcements, so the statement should not be treated as independently demonstrated trading depth or a guarantee of low slippage.

Coinbase also says RLUSD will later become available to customers on Coinbase Global Exchange, with collateral functionality planned. This is a future expansion, not a feature that should be assumed active today. Neither the launch timetable nor collateral terms were specified in the initial statements.

Ripple said in the launch release that RLUSD had exceeded $2.4 billion in market capitalization since its December 2024 introduction. That is a company-reported snapshot, not a live valuation or evidence of future demand. The Coinbase integration may expand access and potential uses, but actual adoption must be assessed through subsequent trading and payment activity.

What Should Users Check Before Transferring RLUSD?

  • Account eligibility: confirm that RLUSD deposits, withdrawals and conversion are enabled for the specific Coinbase account and region.
  • Correct blockchain: match XRPL, Ethereum or Base on both sides; do not rely on the token name alone.
  • Token authenticity: verify the recognized issuer or contract information instead of trusting similarly named tokens or unsolicited wallet links.
  • Costs and conditions: review any network, trading, conversion or withdrawal charges and distinguish an advertised 1:1 conversion from the price of a separate market trade.

The bottom line: Coinbase’s October 28 RLUSD rollout is an expansion of stablecoin access across three distinct blockchains and three existing Coinbase platforms. For users and businesses, the immediate value is an additional supported dollar-denominated asset. The key limitations remain network-specific transfer requirements, regional eligibility, issuer and redemption conditions, and future features that have not yet launched.
