Hong Kong Begins 24/7 Trading of Tokenized Money Market Funds

Updated October 30, 2026. Hong Kong has opened around-the-clock secondary trading for two regulated tokenized money market funds, giving eligible investors a way to buy and sell certain fund shares outside conventional dealing hours. The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) confirmed that trading began on October 26, 2026, under a pilot framework introduced earlier this year.

The two products are the ChinaAMC HKD Digital Money Market Fund and ChinaAMC USD Digital Money Market Fund. The SFC’s October 26 announcement describes the launch as the first secondary trading of tokenized public funds on an SFC-licensed virtual asset trading platform. That world-first characterization is the regulator’s claim, not a separately verified comparison of every market worldwide.

The central change is practical: investors in eligible tokenized share classes can trade with other market participants at a quoted market price, rather than relying only on subscriptions and redemptions through the fund’s regular dealing process. Continuous trading is not the same as continuous liquidity, guaranteed redemption or unrestricted transfer to a private crypto wallet.

Which Tokenized Money Market Funds Are Trading 24/7?

The launch covers designated tokenized shares in ChinaAMC’s Hong Kong dollar and U.S. dollar money market funds. ChinaAMC and PantherTrade identified the initial secondary-market pairs as CAMFF-HKD and CUMFU-USD, associated with the respective Class F shares. It does not automatically make every share class or every tokenized fund in Hong Kong tradable around the clock.

The trading venue is PantherTrade, operated by Panthertrade (Hong Kong) Limited. The SFC’s public licensing list identifies the operator under reference BUY578, licensed since January 27, 2025. A platform’s licence is a regulatory status, not an assurance of its creditworthiness or a guarantee against investment losses.

PantherTrade’s official trading-pair notice identifies both pairs as available to eligible retail and professional investors but explicitly states that deposits and withdrawals of the fund tokens are not supported. Users should therefore not assume they can send these tokenized shares freely between ordinary blockchain wallets and the trading platform.

How Is 24/7 Fund Trading Different From Redemption?

A money market fund normally invests in short-term cash and debt instruments. Investors subscribe for or redeem fund shares under the fund’s dealing rules, generally using a calculated net asset value (NAV). Tokenization represents an ownership interest in digital form; it does not turn that interest into a bank deposit or a dollar-pegged stablecoin.

Hong Kong’s new secondary channel adds a separate way to trade eligible shares. A buyer and seller can execute a transaction on the licensed platform at the available bid or offer, including outside the normal operating hours of the local fund market. The primary subscription and redemption channel remains subject to the fund’s offering documents, valuation procedures and dealing windows.

Feature Primary fund dealing 24/7 secondary trading
Counterparty Fund subscription or redemption process Another market participant through the trading venue
Price Applicable calculated NAV under the fund rules Market bid or offer, which may differ from NAV
Timing Fund dealing days and cutoffs Round-the-clock venue access, subject to trading controls
Main limitation Cutoffs and forward pricing Spread, liquidity, market-price and platform risks

A fund unit trading below NAV may appear inexpensive, but an investor cannot assume that an immediate redemption at NAV is possible during a weekend or a market closure. The same timing gap can matter when a tokenized share trades above NAV.

What Investor Safeguards Does Hong Kong Require?

The SFC’s April 20, 2026 circular sets out a framework covering trading venues, fair pricing, market makers, disclosures and investor onboarding. It requires licensed platforms to display an indicative net asset value (iNAV) on a real-time or near-real-time basis, typically refreshed at least every 15 seconds during trading hours, alongside the fund’s latest official NAV.

The regulatory measures include price-deviation alerts when a proposed trade departs significantly from iNAV; controls such as trading bands and cooling-off periods; monitoring for potential market manipulation; and prominent disclosure of secondary-market risks. Product providers are expected to use their best efforts to arrange at least one market maker, while platform operators monitor market-making performance.

These measures are safeguards, not proof that sufficient buyers and sellers will always be present. The SFC itself warns of thin trading, price fragmentation and potentially substantial premiums or discounts to NAV, particularly during weekends and outside normal Hong Kong financial-market hours.

Are the Tokens Freely Transferable or Equivalent to Stablecoins?

No. PantherTrade’s HKD fund market profile describes the token as representing a fund share, or a fraction of one, while official ownership is reflected in an off-chain register. Its separate trading notice says customer deposits and withdrawals of these tokens are not supported. Access to an on-platform market is therefore not evidence of permissionless peer-to-peer transfers.

A tokenized money market fund also remains an investment product. Its value and potential income depend on the underlying portfolio, fees, credit and interest-rate exposure, as well as trading conditions. It should not be described as cash, a guaranteed one-dollar token or an insured deposit simply because its shares use blockchain technology.

Why Does This Matter for Hong Kong’s Tokenization Strategy?

The October launch builds on the SFC’s April pilot, which allows secondary trading of eligible authorized tokenized investment products through specifically approved arrangements. It is not blanket permission for all fund managers to list their products on crypto exchanges. The regulator says it will monitor the initial activity before considering whether to expand the range of products.

Hong Kong is also exploring the connection between tokenized investment assets and tokenized money. Through Project Ensemble, the SFC and Hong Kong Monetary Authority have been working with financial institutions on the use of tokenized deposits and digital settlement infrastructure. The HKMA’s March 2026 remarks describe further industry work on real-value transactions and liquidity management.

That broader settlement vision should not be confused with functionality proven by this launch. Trading access has been announced and confirmed; this does not establish that every fund sale already settles into a freely transferable tokenized bank deposit, that transactions settle instantaneously in every case, or that the new market has achieved any particular volume or spread.

What Should Investors Check Before Trading?

  • Share class and account eligibility: confirm that the specific ChinaAMC class and trading pair are supported for your account and jurisdiction.
  • Market price versus NAV: examine the live bid, ask, iNAV, latest official NAV and any platform warning before placing an order.
  • Liquidity and charges: review spreads, trading fees and available order depth; 24-hour access does not guarantee a trade at a fair price.
  • Custody and withdrawal restrictions: check how ownership is recorded and whether token deposits or withdrawals are possible. PantherTrade states they are not supported for these pairs.
  • Official product documents: read the fund’s investment objectives, risk disclosures and primary-market subscription and redemption terms.

The bottom line: Hong Kong’s October 26 approval moves two already authorized ChinaAMC money market funds beyond primary-market-only access for designated share classes. The real innovation is a regulated 24/7 secondary trading channel, not a guarantee of around-the-clock redemption, stable prices or unrestricted blockchain transfers. Whether the model attracts sustained use will depend on actual liquidity, pricing, operating reliability and investor demand.
